Once a separate Village, Montmartre has been part of Paris since 1860. Its winding Lanes, its many trees and its picturesque hillsides, still make it seem like it’s a place apart. This is easily my favorite neighborhood. You can stroll past the many cafes and cabarets and you can imagine the artists, the musicians and the writers, even The Poets who made it their home over a hundred years ago.

When rents were still cheap. The most famous site is the gleaming white Basilica of the Sacre Coeur. Built in Italian Byzantine style and visible from most points of Paris. You do get a wonderful view in that area. As you can imagine the tourists often pack the area around Sacre Coeur and the Moulin Rouge theater in Pigalle. But most actually miss the interesting parts of the neighborhood. Make sure you go actually behind and you will see many other sites that you may have missed.
